A DA member whose work I very much admire, and whose involvement in a growing social scene alerted me to the existence of said social scene, posted a very interesting journal entry. I responded to that entry, but I don't think my answer was very well thought out. Or coherent. (Reason for this being it was done just after I woke up.)
I have a long-standing fascination and love of anything Steampunk. I also have a long-standing love of any social scene that varies from the boring day-to-day of normal life. After a long day of retail slaving, I want to know that my friends are intelligent creative people who don't let themselves be guided by the mainstream. I am extremely lucky that my closest friends are a group of such people. They are my family.
Beyond that, however, I long for something more beautiful. It's why I loved the goth scene. Honestly, I have a vain streak, and so I like to look pretty. My aesthetics, however, are not mainstream. Steampunk, goth, whatever--it's beautiful to me, and I enjoy it.
The other thing that draws me to the Steampunk scene (I say scene, but to honest, I'm the only one I know where I live who has any kind of interest in this as a lifestyle) is the free-spirited creativity. I find myself getting caught up in the excitement of having projects to work on. The last few years have been awful for my creativity. Lack of motivation gets me depressed, depression makes me feel like it's not worth the trouble.
Maybe it's a short-term thing, but right now I feel that old spark. And I like it.
